This piece is a classic case of deception. We needed to create fear, apprehension and then subvert it. It all started with the sound of the main character: the crop sprayer. We drew on field recordings of the tractor and layered in extremely low bass rumbles, detuned engines, and a vocal sample that was heavily distorted and overdriven to create the pulsing thud of the machine. Then we added subtle layers of tension with slowly escalating wind, distant thunder, and glass rattling—before pulling it all away for the reveal of the cat video.
